As a child, Michael Speach remembers his family spending the holidays making and selling confections. The constant influx of sweets and the demanding hours of a small business meant that the Speach family sometimes had to put their own spin on tradition. “For Easter,” Michael remembers, “we would get fruit baskets because we were around candy all the time.” But the winter holidays were perhaps the busiest for the family who was called on to fill a high volume of candy orders. “My family used to have a huge Christmas party after the new year,” Michael explains. This was the time when his family and other business owners in the community could comfortably “hang out and be social.”

Today, Speach Family Candy Shoppe‘s Annual Open House is in the same vein as his family’s non-traditional Christmas party: an opportunity for his family, friends, and fellow business owners to come together and celebrate without the demands of the shopping season. Over the last several years, Michael has organized this party before the holiday rush, before he’ll be required to call on friends and family to gather at the shop for a very different reason: to help him fill orders, late into the evening.

This year’s open house will mark an important anniversary for the Speach business as they commemorate “95 years of sweetness in Central New York,” a legacy that has become a staple not only on the Northside, but throughout our region. The celebration will stretch into the weekend: November 6th and 7th from 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM each day.  Guests can enjoy  samples of Speach’s candy, tastings from a variety of local businesses, special pricing for pre-holiday orders, and a raffle for 50 different prizes to benefit The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, ACR Health, Hope for Heather, Maureen’s Hope, and the Alzheimer’s Association. The event is free and open to the public.
